The Dartmouth Yacht Club (DYC) is accepting applications for coaches for our summer Learn to Sail program for the 2025 season. We are looking for enthusiastic, skilled instructors who can inspire and engage new sailors while promoting a safe and positive learning environment. Successful candidates will plan and execute effective training sessions, manage on-land and on-water activities, and foster a love of sailing among participants.
About the Program
DYC’s Learn to Sail program introduces individuals to the joys of sailing, focusing on safety, skill development, and creating lifelong memories on the water. Our programs range from beginner Wet Feet sessions to advanced CANSail levels, supporting sailors as they grow and develop their skills.
Positions Available
- Summer Learn to Sail Coach
Coaches will be assigned to various age groups and skill levels throughout the season. Program offerings include Wet Feet and CANSail 1–6.
Responsibilities
- Create a safe, engaging, and fun environment for participants of all ages and skill levels.
- Deliver effective and structured daily training sessions.
- Develop and implement weekly plans to enhance sailors’ skills and confidence.
- Supervise participants during both on-land and on-water activities.
- Represent DYC professionally at regattas and events, if applicable.
- Report to the DYC Head Coach and General Manager.
Qualifications
- Sail Canada Instructor Certification (CANSail or higher as required for the role).
- Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).
- VHF Operator Certificate (ROC-M).
- Previous coaching experience or experience working with youth is an asset.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment.
Terms of Employment
- Term: June 2025 – September 2025 with additional work available during Spring & Fall Programs throughout May & September.
- Hours: Weekly hours vary based on programming and events.
- Compensation: Based on experience and qualifications.
- Training Fee Reimbursements: Successful candidates will receive partial reimbursement for Sail Canada instructor dues, certification renewals, and other pre-approved training fees upon completion of their contract.
- Retention Bonus Structure: Coaches who fulfill their contract and remain with the program through the end of the season will receive an end-of-contract bonus.
